Sureesh Mehta

Admiral (Retd.) Sureesh Mehta, PVSM, AVSM, took over as the Chairman National Maritime Foundation on 18 Jan 2012. He was Chief of the Naval Staff from October 2006 – August 2009 and held concurrent charge as the Chairman Chiefs of Staff Committee September 2008 onwards. After his retirement from Indian Navy, he was appointed the High Commissioner of India to New Zealand from December 2009 – December 2011.
Education : 
An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, he was commissioned into the Executive Branch of the Indian Navy in July 1967. Shortly thereafter, he joined the Indian Naval Air Arm and extensively flew the Hawker Sea Hawks from the aircraft carrier Vikrant. He is a graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, India and has also carried out instructional duties as a directing staff in that institute. He also attended the National Defence College, New Delhi in 1994.
Experience : 

The Admiral commanded Indian Naval Ships Beas and Godavari and Indian Naval Air Station Garuda at Kochi. On promotion to flag rank he held the appointments of the Flag Officer Naval Aviation, Assistant Controller of Warship Production & Acquisition, Assistant Chief of Personnel (Human Resource Development) and commanded the Western Fleet of Indian Navy, based at Mumbai.

Upon promotion to the rank of Vice Admiral, Admiral Mehta was appointed Controller Personnel Services and then the Chief of Personnel. He commanded Indian Coast Guard as the Director General and was appointed Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff before taking over as the Flag Officer Commanding in Chief, Eastern Naval Command at Vizag.

He was awarded the Ati Vishist Seva Medal in 1995 and the Param Vishist Seva Medal in 2005 for distinguished service of the most exceptional order.

Admiral Mehta is married to Mrs Maria Teresa Mehta and they have two children.
